Delen: het nieuwe hebben / Sharing: the new having

Volgens 1001 names for Australian babies is Jeanine een vrouwelijke vorm van John, veruit de populairste naam ooit. God is gracious zou de betekenis zijn. Dat is nieuw voor me. Ik meende als 'licht van Jahweh' door het leven te gaan, maar Gods genade voelt toch net iets relaxter, alsof je je wat minder waar hoeft te maken. Tussen de 1001 namen vind ik maar vijf echt Australische namen, waaronder Kylie (boemerang) en Kiri (boomschors). Tja! Dan is het logisch dat de schrijfster voor haar eigen Australische baby’s elders is gaan zoeken (haar dochters heten Amelia (Foenicisch voor ijverig) en Elissa (vernoemd naar de koningin van Carthago).

Wachtend op de bus, op een bankje op Hoog Catharijne, vermaak ik me prima met dit merkwaardige boekje. Ik heb het net gevonden bij Boekspot. Deze gratis boekwinkel ligt in de centrale hal van station Utrecht en is bijna altijd open. Je kunt er boeken halen, maar ook brengen. Het is er druk met mensen en vol met boeken. Een moeder en dochter overleggen uitgebreid welk boek ze mee zullen nemen. Een student is aandachtig aan het lezen. En een meneer plakt stickers op zijn boeken die hij uit een grote volle draagtas haalt*. Netjes zet hij alles in de kast. Ik kies meestal iets aparts wat ik nooit zou kopen. Een fantasy stripboek, pageturners als Frederique zet door en Winden waaien om de rotsen of een melig economieboek. Bij mijn volgende reis zet ik het gekozen boek weer terug in deze openbare boekenkast, met een paar extra eigen exemplaren die ik niet meer gebruik.

Terwijl ik in een gewone boekwinkel soms een paar boeken tegelijk koop, houd ik me hier vanzelf in en neem ik één boek per keer mee. Dat lijkt standaard, want niemand zit er tassen vol te laden. Interessant. Kun je beter maat houden als alles gewoon voor grijpen staat?

Boekspots en soortgelijke initiatieven schieten als paddenstoelen uit de grond. Delen is het nieuwe hebben. Hoe meer je geeft, hoe meer je krijgt. Dát zijn de wetten van de nieuwe economie. Wat een geweldige ontwikkeling! Zo is er overvloed voor iedereen.
Doe lekker mee! Breng je spullen naar weggeefwinkels of Boekspots. Of maak je eigen free bookshop, ruilwinkeltje of buurtleenpunt. Gewoon een doos buiten op je stoep kan ook: 'neem mee' 

Sharing: the new having 

According to 1001 names for Australian babies Jeanine is a feminine form of John, by far the most popular name ever. 'God is gracious', the meaning would be. That's news to me. I meant to go through life as 'light of Yahweh'; God's grace however feels slightly more relaxed, as if you don't have to prove yourself. Between the 1001 names I find only five truly Australian names including Kylie (boomerang) and Kiri (bark). Well! In that case it is understandable that the author abroad to name her own Australian babies; her daughters are called Amelia (Phoenician for diligent) and Elissa (named after the Queen of Carthage).

Waiting for the bus on a bench in Hoog Catharijne, I enjoy myself just fine with this remarkable book that I have just found in Boekspot. This free bookstore is located in the central hall of Utrecht station and is almost always open. You can get books, but also bring. It is crowded with people and full of books. A mother and daughter deliberate extensively which book they want to choose.  A student is reading in concentration. And a gentleman is putting stickers on his books that he brought in a fully packed large plastic bag *. He puts everything neatly in the closet. I usually choose a special book that I would never buy. A fantasy comic book, page turners as Frederique won't give up and Winds blowing around the rocks or a tiresome book about economics. At my next trip I return the books to this public bookcase, with a few extra ones from own collection. While I never hesitate to buy a few books at a time in a regular bookstore, in Boekspot I only take one book at a time. This seems
standard,  because nobody will load full bags. Interesting. Is it easier to draw the line, if everything is there for the taking? Boekspots and similar initiatives are fastly mushrooming. Sharing is the new having. The more you give, the more you get. Thése are the laws of the new economy. What a great development! Like this there will be enough for everyone.
